Q&A: How come Obama just can’t seem to make up his mind?

Question by Barry Marx: How come Obama just can’t seem to make up his mind?
Judging by the White House statement after a federal judge struck down California’s Proposition 8 on Wednesday, you might reckon President Obama supports the rights of gays to marry.

The president “has spoken out in opposition to Proposition 8 because it is divisive and discriminatory. He will continue to promote equality for LGBT Americans,” the White House said.

But Obama does not endorse gay marriage. As a candidate for president, he consistently said marriage should be reserved for a man and a woman.

“I believe that marriage is between a man and woman and I am not in favor of gay marriage,” the candidate said just days before the election in 2008.

So maybe Obama supports the 1996 federal Defense of Marriage Act, which codified a federal ban on gay marriage and is one of the key targets for repeal by the gay community?

Incorrect again.

After initially saying the law should not be repealed, Obama switched his position in 2004, calling the law “abhorrent” and calling for its reversal.

“When Members of Congress passed DOMA, they were not interested in strengthening family values or protecting civil liberties,” Obama wrote in a letter to a gay-oriented Chicago newspaper. “They were only interested in perpetuating division and affirming a wedge issue.”

In 2007, he clarified his change of heart as the result of conversations with gay friends, who clarified how hurtful the legislation was. Obama repeated his desire to repeal the act as a presidential candidate. But the president has not actively sought an appeal. He has said he would support such an effort by Congress, but has accepted the sentiment among Congressional leaders that, in the current political environment, a repeal would not pass.

Instead, Obama supports civil unions, the extension of legal benefits to gay couples, which he says provide vital rights to gays and lesbians in their everyday lives. Never mind that many gay activists view civil unions as an unwelcome half-measure that undermines efforts to secure the right to marry.

Q&A: Are some of the websites where we are getting our information on the candidates’ stances WRONG?

Question by Cerberus: Are some of the websites where we are getting our information on the candidates’ stances WRONG?
I have read every candidate’s views on this site:

http://projects.washingtonpost.com/2008-presidential-candidates/

The pages I have been using don’t list any opinions or report any news. They only give answers (in the candidates’ own words) to certain questions to determine where they stand. So, it can’t be biased.

I never considered that it could be INACCURATE.

Yet, on gay marriage, this is the entry for Obama:

Question: What is your position on the proposed constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between a man and a woman?

Answer: I oppose the Federal Marriage Amendment.

http://projects.washingtonpost.com/2008-presidential-candidates/issues/candidates/barack-obama/#gay-marriage

The Federal Marriage Amendment clearly states that marriage can only be between one man and one woman.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Marriage_Amendment

So, if Obama is AGAINST that. That would mean that he’s FOR gay marriage, right?

Yet, this is what he says about it:

That’s EXACTLY what McCain and Hillary say about gay marriage and civil unions, too.

Hillary’s response:

Question: What is your position on the proposed constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between a man and a woman?

Answer: The question of marriage is one that historically has been left to the states. I opposed the so-called ‘Family Marriage Amendment’ because this issue has no place in the Constitution.

Question: What is your position on civil unions between same sex partners?

Answer: I believe gay and lesbian couples should have the same rights and responsibilities as all Americans, and I believe that civil unions are the best way to achieve this goal. As President, I will work to ensure that all Americans in committed relationships have equal benefits.

http://projects.washingtonpost.com/2008-presidential-candidates/issues/candidates/hillary-clinton/#gay-marriage

And this site says that Hillary, Obama and McCain have the exact same stances on gay marriage and civil unions, too:

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/issues/issues.samesexmarriage.html

Like Obama and McCain, Hillary says that she is AGAINST gay marriage:

http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=52647

Yet, people keep saying that she’s FOR gay marriage, and all of the gay people that I have heard speak about about it say that she is FOR gay marriage and that it’s one of the main reasons they support her.

Why do they believe she’s FOR gay marriage, when HILLARY keeps saying that she is NOT?:

Anyway, my question is: Are these websites where we are checking the candidates’ stances WRONG?

If they are NOT incorrect…

How can you say that you do NOT want the definition of marriage to be between “one man and one woman” only. But, you are AGAINST gay marriage? Does that mean that they are for POLYGAMY?!

McCain is the only one who said that he supports the amendment defining marriage as between one man and one woman. So, I’m not confused about HIS stance at all.

Can anyone please clarify the rest of the questions that I have raised here? I am truly confused.
I’m sorry that this entry is so long, but I didn’t know how else to lay it all out to clarify why I’m confused.
@Yutsnark: Thank you very much for reading this whole thing and trying to help me know it.

I’m thinking that you mean that while it’s Obama and Hillary’s PERSONAL opinion that gay marriage is incorrect, they don’t believe the government should make any laws about it. At least, that was what I got from what you said.

Now I’m just confused about how people can make decisions about laws without considering their own beliefs and views. How can they vote on an issue WITHOUT considering their own personal views? I mean, how else do you choose what to vote for or against?

*sigh* I reckon I’m just going to leave this one alone. It’s making me even MORE confused…lol

Thanks again

Answer by yutsnark
Obama and Clinton believe the institution called “marriage” should be reserved for a union between one man and one woman — and yet they oppose a constututional amendment which would specify that. (They feel the current system of laws is sufficient to regulate marriage.) I believe McCain, in contrast, would support a constitutional amendment.

Can one sue spouse’s mistress in Michigan as the cause for divorce?

Question by lawrence: Can one sue spouse’s mistress in Michigan as the cause for divorce?
I have a close friend right now who has a husband that has had a girlfriend for over a year and she has told her husband to end it. She thinks her husband is leaning towards a divorce. I read somewhere where a wife sued her husbands mistress in a civil suit. Can this be done? The “other woman ” is well aware that he is married and will not give up trying to break up the marriage.

In her divorce proceedings, she can cite one of the multiple causes as infidelity during the marriage — and make sure that her attorney calls the mistress to testify during the divorce (if necessary).

Hatred or Advocacy?

Question by кίςς რε-ℹრ ℹґℹςℏ: Hatred or Advocacy?
From this, what do you see? Do you see hatred? Or do you see the first advocate of women’s rights?

“Before the advent of Islam women were often treated worse than animals. The Prophet wanted to place a stop to all cruelties to women. He preached kindness towards them. He told the Muslims: “Dread God in respect of women.” And: “The best of you are they who behave best to their wives.” And: “A Muslim must not despise his wife, and if he be displeased with one terrible quality in her, let him be pleased with one that is excellent.” And: “The more civil and kind a Muslim is to his wife, the more perfect in faith he is.” The Prophet, peace be upon him, was most emphatic in enjoining upon Muslims to be kind to their women when he delivered his well-known sermon (Arabic: khutba on the Mount of Mercy, at Arafat, in the presence of one hundred and twenty-four thousand of his Companions who had gathered there for the Hajj al-Wada (Farewell Pilgrimage).
In it he ordered those present, and through them all those Muslims who were to come later, to be respectful and kind towards women. He said:

“Dread God regarding women. Verily you have married them with the trust of God, and made their bodies lawful with the word of God. You have got (rights) over them, and they have got (rights) over you in respect of their food and clothing according to your means.”

In Islam a woman is a completely independent personality. She can make any contract or bequest in her own name. She is entitled to inherit in her position as mother, as wife, as sister and as daughter. She has perfect liberty to choose her husband. The pagan society of pre-Islamic Arabia had an irrational prejudice against their female children whom they used to bury alive. The Messenger of God, peace be upon him, was really opposed to this practice. He showed them that supporting their female children would act as a screen for them against the fire of Hell:
It is narrated by the Prophet’s wife, ‘A’isha, that a woman entered her house with two of her daughters. She questioned for charity but ‘A’isha could not find anything except a date, which was given to her. The woman divided it between her two daughters and did not eat any herself. Then she got up and left. When the Prophet, peace be upon him, came to the house, ‘A’isha told him about what had happened and he declared that when this woman was brought to account (on the Day of Judgment) about her two daughters, they would act as a screen for her from the fires of Hell.”

Please tell me whats wrong with my thinking(gay marriage)?

Question by leahfu: Please tell me whats incorrect with my thinking(gay marriage)?
Marriage for the most part started out as a religious thing. It was a unification of a man and a woman in the eyes of God to pro-make. So for that part calling the unification of a man and a man or a woman and a woman “marriage” isn’t right.

I live in THE United States of America. In this country we have equal rights for everyone. Whether one religion sees something as a sin or not. I believe just because I would never marry someone of the same sex, it doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be available(civil union wise) because this is a country of many beliefs(and non at all) and to rule by one(or a few) isn’t right when it infringes on someone’s freedom.
I do not reckon churches should be forced to “marry” people of the same sex because that infringes on THEIR rights.

Basically what I’m saying is that even though my religion sees this as a sin I don’t reckon we should oppress people the right to be pleased. Our country was founded on the ideal that no man should be repressed because of his beliefs.

Why does the U.S. government think that they can dictate who we can or cannot marry?

Question by evil_dead_army_reject_666: Why does the U.S. government reckon that they can dictate who we can or cannot marry?
Gays and lesbians who wish to marry or to have civil unions, have as much right to do so as anyone else in this country. Yet many politicians as well as lawmakers are against it. They say that marriage is “decribed as a union between a man and a woman”. I say that any one who wish to have a monogomous relationship should be allowed to marry and to live as happily as they can. I have known many heterosexual couples who are abusive to each other, yet the “norm” is that only they can marry. I reckon that many christian groups only tolerate gays and lesbians as long as it benefits the christian “rights”. Our elected government should not have any right to tell us how to live our lives when it comes to marriage or certain other aspects. That would be the same as denying an interracial couple the right to marry, which was illegal about 160 years ago. I had thought that with the coming of the new century that we had reached a new level of civility….I guess not. Remember: Gays can vote also.

what’s wrong with gay marriage?

Question by james p: what’s incorrect with gay marriage?
obviously to christians it is a sin, but was this nation not founded with the thought of separation of church and state? benjamin franklin and thomas jefferson, two very vital founding fathers were deists, not christians. and the christianity of even george washington is debatable!

anyway, even if we’re gonna define marriage as “between a man and a woman,” why not have civil unions which we give equal rights? then all those babies that weren’t lost due to abortion could have a excellent home. just because people are gay doesn’t mean they are child molesters, and i doubt that there are more gay pedophiles than straight pedophiles. anyway, just looking for why anyone wouldn’t gay people to have the legal right to unite other than the fact that they don’t support seperation of church and state.

Why hate? Seriously.?

Question by A Girl: Why despise? Seriously.?
Discrimination is discrimination. You can’t take away somebody’s rights just because they are gay and YOU don’t agree with it. It’s like saying “I don’t like the color purple, so I’m taking away rights from anyone who wears purple.”

Listen, I know that everyone is allowed to have their own beliefs and opinions on subjects such as gay marriage and gay rights, but you can’t take away someone’s rights because of differences of beliefs. This country needs to stop running on personal beliefs and start running on what should’ve been done along time ago, which is EQUALITY!

The church and the government NEED TO BE SEPARATE! Government should get their noses out of marriage!

I get this statement all the time – “Marriage should be between a man and a woman!”

Perfectly understandable. But I believe the Bible is outdated and doesn’t fit with the modern world. The Bible was written in a time when Jesus walked the Earth and preached the word of God. That hasn’t happen in… I don’t know, forever?

And I also get this alot- “Why do “you people” want to get married? Civil Unions are enough!” WRONG!

Civil unions are NOT ENOUGH! With marriage comes over 800 rights including everything involving insurance, adoption, and hospital visitation rights. Now, with civil unions, you only have a small over 300, and none of the ones I just mentioned come with civil unions. Imagine how heartbreaking it would be to have your husband, wife, or lover in the hospital and you weren’t allowed to see them because you aren’t considered a “real” couple.

And then there’s the debate over “you chose to be this way!” Now, this debate has been going on forever and you know what, I believe I was born lesbian and I’m sure most of the people in the gay community believe the same way. Don’t get me incorrect, there are people who do in fact turn gay, but that is still absolutely no reason to despise.

Sorry for the length. But here’s my point. People get SO caught up in this argument that they forget that they are dealing with HUMAN BEINGS. Living, breathing, hard working, contributing human beings. And running a country on personal belief NEEDS TO STOP! This country needs equality for all! If you don’t support gay rights or gay marriage, that’s okay! Just don’t marry a person of the same sex!

Just accept that everyone has different opinions and beliefs.

Your thoughts??
Sorry if it seems like I’m on a rampage, but I’m frustrated. I want to get married and adopt one day.

Can an already married couple turn their marriage into a civil union?

Question by Ty: Can an already married couple turn their marriage into a civil union?
My wife and I have been happily married for three years now, but we aren’t religious in any way and we don’t want to be associated with the term “marriage.” Marriage has become synonymous with the bigoted “one man, one woman” Christian beliefs. Since we aren’t Christians, and we want to support the right of all people to be equal under the law, we’d like to have a civil union instead. Is there anyway to turn a marriage into a civil union?
Well, I had assumed it would be understood that we weren’t interested in a going through the process of a divorce (must have missed the *happily married* part…) but based on the answers it seems like that would be the only way to do it, and the tax/legal ramifications simply wouldn’t be worth it. Thanks for your answers! Oh, and some of you guys are living personifications of the Internet Dickwad theory (http://www.pennyarcademerch.com/pat070381.html). Just because you have anonymity doesn’t mean you have to be immediately rude to someone you don’t know. Calling me names obviously isn’t going to make me agree with your point of view…

Is President Obama a bigot because of his view that marriage is between a man and a woman?

Question by KRO: Is President Obama a bigot because of his view that marriage is between a man and a woman?
President Obama has stated, “I do not support gay marriage. Marriage has religious and social connotations, and I consider marriage to be between a man and a woman.” He does but support equal rights for homosexual couples in civil unions. This is a view that many conservatives share. Myself, for one. Glenn Beck is another I can reckon of. Yet after stating my view on gay marriage, which is that we should basically give them the exact same rights and benefits a married couple has and call it anything but marriage, I have been called a bigot and a homophobe. ( I don’t reckon it should be outlawed, but, I reckon it should be for the people to vote on by state.) Is there a double standard here?
Okay it seems some people haven’t read my whole paragraph. I don’t reckon he’s a bigot at all! ***I agree completely with him!*** I was referring to the pass he gets from people who don’t agree with him while they slam conservatives for having the same view. Read the whole question!

Can you define marriage? what about civil union?

Question by stuck between a rock and a hard place: Can you define marriage? what about civil union?
and if your definition is the “between a man and a women,” I will accept that as the religious view when a religious officials weds two people. But I’m not asking about the religious view. I am asking when you go down to the county court in front of a judge of any give state. Therefore according to the founding documents of the USA, there should be a separation of church .i.e. religious laws, and the state. Therefore the church view is not what I’m looking for.

When two people are wed, they delight in the right to file taxes together. Its nothing more then a piece of paper saying this person and this person like each other. If someone wants to insist that marriage is a sacred bound between and man and a women, well then say okay, keep the word marriage, what about civil union.

Answer by Alissa
My Definition: A marriage is when a man and a woman join together for life to raise a family.

World English Dictionary
marriage
— n
1. the state or relationship of being husband and wife
2. a. the legal union or contract made by a man and woman to live as husband and wife
b. ( as modifier ): marriage licence ; marriage certificate
3. the religious or legal ceremony formalizing this union; wedding
4. a close or intimate union, relationship, etc: a marriage of thoughts
5. (in certain card games, such as bezique, pinochle) the king and queen of the same suit

Legal Dictionary
Main Entry: mar·riage
Pronunciation: ‘mar-ij
Function: noun
1 : the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a legal, consensual, and contractual relationship recognized and sanctioned by and dissolvable only by law —see also DIVORCE
2 : the ceremony containing certain legal formalities by which a marriage relationship is made
Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary of Law

I guess the dictionaries hold religious views, ay? LOL

Main Entry: civil union
Part of Speech: n
Definition: a legally recognized and voluntary union of adult parties of the same sex
Example: Parties to a civil union have all the same protections, responsibilities, and rights as partners in marriage.

It looks like Marriages are for man and wife and people who believe marriage is more than a piece of paper, and Civil unions are for gay people. That’s the difference.
If marriages are just a piece of paper, like you said, and are the same as a civil union then vote for gays to have civil unions and vote for marriage to keep it’s definition, then everyone will be pleased.

My mom won’t let me join the Civil Air Patrol?

Question by Aurore: My mom won’t let me join the Civil Air Patrol?
Hi. I am currently 15 years ancient. My family and I went to an airshow at an airforce base two yrs ago, and it had a stand representing the Civil Air Patrol. I had been wanting to join the air force ever since I was about 11.

My dad, an air force veteran, noticed my enthusiasm and encouraged me to join. At age 12, when I was ancient enough, I questioned my mom and she prohobited me from joining because she used to be in the air force too and said it was ‘no place for women.” But this is my passion. She even lied to me and told me thst my dad didn’t want me to do it (even though he was really excited and supportive of me).

My mother is very narotic and my parents fight constantly. Please don’t comment on her, as it would take too long to clarify. trust me. Now, at 15, I have an unstoppable passion to join. I Ordered an information packet, and my dad is right there with me. I AM going to join. How will I handle my dad letting me and my mom not when it comes time to sign up?

Most common logical fallacies used by opponents of gay marriage?

Question by Vernon Dozier: Redux: Most common logical fallacies used by opponents of gay marriage?
How many can you name?

Examples:

“Marriage has ALWAYS been between a man and a woman.”

-Appeal to Tradition. This fallacy consists in attempting to persuade others of a point of view by appealing to their feelings of reverence or respect for tradition instead of evidence. Just because something has always been one way, it doesn’t mean change isn’t appropriate.

“The majority of Americans are against gay marriage!”

-Appeal to the Majority, Appeal to Common Opinion. This fallacy consists in urging the acceptance (or rejection) of a position simply on the grounds that a large number of people accept (or reject) it. Remember, the majority of Americans supported racial segregation before (and even during) the Civil Rights movement.

“Gay marriage goes against God’s laws.” (or some other similar variation)

-Appeal to Irrelevant Authority: This fallacy consists in attempting to support a claim by appealing to the judgment of one who is not a commonly recognized authority or is not an identifiable authority. Not everyone follows “God’s laws” or even believes in “God” to start with. Besides, America is not a theocracy. It is a democracy, protected by the tenants of the US Constitution.

Other examples?
Engineer: The rights guaranteed by the US Constitution seem like a pretty logically sound argument to me. Your “man fits together with a woman argument” doesn’t hold water.
Ohhh an Oceanwoman appearance. :)
C i atheist: I can feel your eyes all over my ‘stache. Vernon likey.

Do you want to learn about women status in Islam?

Question by pink: Do you want to learn about women status in Islam?
(not the women status in Muslim countries coz it varies depending on one’s religious knowledge).
This is part of the 14 pages (originally 45) If you want to know more I’ll be glad to send them to your email coz it won’t fit on here nor on the “send a message” link. send me your email to powderblue1981@yahoo.com
…According to “liberated” women, the hijab not only covers the head, but also covers the mind, will, and intellect. They speak out of ignorance when they say that hijab does not belong in these modern times, when due to the constant decrease in moral values in the world today, circumstances make the hijab even more necessary. More than ever before, sex crimes are rampant and “liberated women” face increasing higher chances of being raped or sexually harassed. The Federal Government conducted research in which they found that in America,a sexual assault is committed every six minutes…

I checked my email and there are no email addresses from those who wanted more info!
In Islam girls are not left to be harrassed or assaulted because it’s “not her fault”!
What would knowing that it is “not her fault” fix any thing to her! she would still be hurt might need councelling as well or live in shame all her life. WHEN IT IS NOT HER FAULT TO BEGIN WITH!
When women protect themselves with decent clothes they are leaving no place for “oops”! or “it wasn’t my fault”.
BrynL who told you Mulsim women who get raped should be executed?! also who told you she needs any witnesses to defend herself?! Who told you women’s testimony is half a man’s?you are deep in misunderstanding!!
About the testimony one woman’s testimony is enough, they need two women only to WITNESS a dept contract! for specific reasons. read that sign from surat AL Bakarah.

In the case of male witnesses their memory of a transaction that they attest as witnesses would be refreshed when they met socially and the transaction was recalled for one reason or another. In the case of a document recording a transaction, which is attested by one male and one female witness, the female witness, under the Islamic social system would not normally have frequent occasion to meet the male witness and talk to him, so that there would be small chance of her memory of the transaction being refreshed. To overcome this lack of opportunity to refresh her memory…
…., it is provided that where only one male witness is available two female witnesses may be called upon so that, in the very words of the text, one may refresh the memory of the other.

This provision is concerned only with the preservation of evidence, and DOES NOT deal with the weight to be attached to the testimony of a male or female witness.
It’s only about witnessing not about testifying in court.

Someone must be messing with you BRYN L

Should being against gay marriage have cost Miss CA the Miss USA beauty contest?

Question by roccopaperiello: Should being against gay marriage have cost Miss CA the Miss USA beauty contest?
According to the news, the runner-up at the Miss USA beauty pageant says her outspoken opposition to gay marriage cost her first place in the competition.

During the televised event, Carrie Prejean – Miss California – said she believed that “a marriage should be between a man and a woman”.
Ms Prejean, after the competition. She added: “I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman.”

“No offense to anyone out there, but that’s how I was raised.”

The remarks drew a mixture of booing and applause from the audience.

Hilton said he had been “floored” by Ms Prejean’s answer, which, he said, “alienated millions of gay and lesbian Americans, their families and their supporters”.

He told ABC News: “She lost it because of that question. She was certainly the front-runner before that.”

Keith Lewis, who runs the Miss California competition, released a statement condemning Ms Prejean’s comments.

“As co-director of the Miss California USA, I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss California believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman.”

===================================================
Now this is what I do not know. I AM gay. I am also married to my same sex pertner. AND I am really in favor of seme-sex marriage being recognized by the government.

But, even I would not have taken away her first place standing on that one question. It was merely an honest opinion. And we should ALL be entitled to our religious views.

Note that she did NOT state anything about passing laws or amendments to curtail anyones civil rights: that might have been different.

What is YOUR opinion? And why?

Please I am not asking for a bunch of Bibler quotes. I am fully aware of them. My question ONLY concerns how this person lost her first place ranking.
SHOCK THE WORLD: That was something i had not considered.

And those of you who keep repeating ad nausium “God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve” look around you. Empirical evidence proves you incorrect
ITS SO CLEAR NOW: What polls have you been looking at? There is at this time on ly a very SLIM majority of Americans against gay marriage, and the polls over the past few years show that the thought of gay marriage is gaining support. In NY right now, 53% (in a recent poll) are in favor of gay marriage rights.
JAMES: That is a very insulting, crude, and rude answer.

Would you be in favor of a woman doing the same?
MEG M: I suspect you are right. At least you have a lot of company with this same view.
ANONNiE MOUSE: In fact that was what she DID NOT STATE. (At least not in any report I read).
A person CAN be for gay’s civil rights, and still be against gay marriage for religious reasons. She never mentioned anything about VOTING or DOING anything which would limit the marriage rights of gays.
JOSE G: I invited opinions. So I got yours. I also believe that you are so really incorrect on many counts including your ignorance of just what “normaL” and “ethical” means. Fortunately as our society gains a better understanding of civil rights, sexual orientation, and “ethics” gay marriage is gaining ground and will eventually become the law of the land.
Thank you all for taking the time to answer.
Nickname: You really have the idiotic notion that gay marriage is a matter of entitlement?

Even on the face of it, this is unture. Please go to the following site:

Q&A: What happened to this country’s sense of sacrifice?

Question by jaygualtieri: What happened to this country’s sense of sacrifice?
Back in World War II this nation rallied together during a Depression. Whole industries converted to the war effort, CEO’s took dollar-a-year salaries. People bought war bonds to pay for the war. Victory gardens were planted. Meat was rationed. Tobacco was rationed. Gas was rationed. Rubber was rationed. Metal was rationed. Kitchen grease was recycled. Homefront commandos patrolled our coast and heartland. Rosie the Riveter told working women “WE CAN DO IT!” Tuskegee Airman stuck a huge blow for civil rights. Taxes were raised.

Today, to those who still support the war in Iraq support means calling other Americans traitors and snarling “I PUT A STICKER ON THE BACK OF MY SUV! WHAT MORE CAN A MAN DO?”

Before I get branded a traitor myself–I donate blood. So there are soldiers out there who are alive because of my blood. That’s far more than what 90%+ of this war’s supporters will EVER do.

What the hell happened to this country?
