Peter Pans are men that, in desiring not to “become what they despise”, i.e. in trying to avoid becoming “assholes”, become soft … at least on the outside. Unable to take a stand for himself, recognize his core values, or set boundaries, he has no choice except to become passive-aggressive.

There is another side to this coin, but. Men in other cultures and subcultures have a different dilemma. These cultures that are more misogynistic and sex negative than ours produce men that are so worried of women that they actively oppress them. They present an unhealthy aggression, a preemptive aggression that emerges from shadow. This is not Goddess worship; it is thinly veiled dread and despise. These men really do need to get more in touch with their feminine side and to honor the mothers of their children as political and social equals.

But whether Peter Pan or King Kong, all these men have something in common: They are numb within their own chest. Their grief has been driven underground. What our culture and their cultures do not tell them is that their grief is a door to their healing.

 

Grieving

As men, we need to grieve. Without grief we cannot navigate our emotional bodies.

There is a recognition that men who cannot or do not grieve are cut off from themselves – from the deeper context of their lives. But we cannot escape from our pain by stuffing it. We must transmute it, and in order to transmute our pain we must feel it. Smothered pain festers. Festering pain will always emerge, somehow. It cannot stay submerged forever. When it does emerge it usually shows up as some sort physical or emotional trauma or “dis-ease”. On the other hand, through our grieving, we open and awaken our chest. This gives our pain psychological and spiritual air that keeps it from festering.

Small of moving to Africa, there are things we can do in order to keep our emotional bodies healthy enough to periodically grieve. The best way to access grief is the conscious commitment to do so. We need to notice what we are feeling; we need to pay attention. It helps to give ourselves permission to weep. We can allow ourselves to weep, to be seen. And the truth is that without access to our emotional body, without knowing what we are feeling, we men cannot find our way home.

I remember reading somewhere a quote on manhood that reads “Make it a life rule to give your best to whatever passes through your hands. Stamp it with your manhood. Let superiority be your trademark.”

So the question then becomes what do women really want? The answer is a complete package, which includes the traits and qualities listed below:

Ambitious/Strong/Assertive

An ambitious man is a successful man because he strives for the best, no matter what his goals are. Strength does not necessitate muscles but inner strength. He is able to reach inside, draw from that strength when it is needed and share it if the need arises. He goes after what he wants without stepping on feet or toes but maneuvers around them.

Responsible

He knows his responsibilities and owns up to them, whether it is family, work, and commitments. A man recognizes that mistakes are a part of life. He admits to them, doesn’t blame others or make excuses for his inconsistencies. He learns from them and acts accordingly.

Understanding

Recognizes that no one is perfect, including himself. Encourages communication efforts to resolve vital issues. Realizes the final say does not have to go one way (especially his way) or another, but knows that a compromise is always a possibility.

In Tune With Himself

He has self-awareness spiritually and mentally. He likes self, takes care of himself but is able to like others as well. He can hold a decent conversation with anyone and he knows how to express himself in any given conversation. He is respected by others and recognizes that in order to get respect, you have to give it. He can accept constructive criticism without taking it personally and recognizes that opinion is individual and each is entitled to his or hers.

Compassion

He is unselfish and caring of others around him. He is neither self-centered nor egotistical. He thinks of others, and the feelings of others. Men are told from day one that men are not suppose to weep because it is a show weakness. Crying makes them human, and it has nothing to do with strength. It has to do with feeling. The lack of dread in showing right feelings constitutes strength and courage.

Relationships and Like

* He is caring giving, honest, loyal and respects the lady in his life

* He is willing to work things out together

* He respects his mate as his other half

* He knows that sharing is essential, excellent terrible whatever

Each woman’s definition of a man encompasses many different qualities, and each woman has her own standards. Certainly my list is not a listing of the only qualities of manhood, but it is certainly a start.

Some might feel it is unrealistic to expect to have a man that is worthy of such admiration and respect, and provides such devotion. I say that there is no perfection in anyone, but for someone to be human, loving, caring is very close.
