Stefano Moro (Van Wyk) employs imagination and visually-fascinating lens techniques, photographing Agnete Hegelund as an icy jewels princess for the February edition of Flair. Paolo Turina styles Agnete in ladylike looks including Lanvin, Prada and Louis Vuitton, shot against a backdrop of oversized pastel florals.  For us the some of the images in’Flowers in Winter’ are a bit dark and grey —- strictly a matter of personal taste— but with a bit more lift, the technique can be exquisite and fashion photos as art. This is a gorgeous, fresh image direction. Anne

First Impressions, Women and the World of Plastic Surgery

First Impressions, Women and the World of Plastic Surgery

Beatrice Morabito | Making Waves | Modern Aphrodites-1 AOC Private Studio

More and more people, especially women are paying greater attention to their physical appearance – and for  a woman like me, a simple mascara to enhance my eyes and lip gloss are still reflection that we are a product of media and that we embrace changes to our natural physical appearance. According to the American Society for Aethetic Plastic Surgery, nearly 9.5 million Americans had received cosmetic procedures in 2010. This is an increase of nine percent in the past year, with surgical procedures accounting for 17 percent of the total.

What was once considered part of the domain of wealthy older women has now become a mainstream option for many individuals, regardless of income bracket or lifestyle. A recent survey has revealed that more than half of Americans approve of plastic surgery. These numbers suggest that many people, regardless of income, marital status or gender, view plastic surgery as a reasonable option.

The World of First Impressions

Cosmetic surgery can have a positive impact on a person if their body image is consistently associated to a negative focus on a body part or facial feature.  An article “Plastic surgery: Beauty or beast?” reminds us that physically attractive people receive preferential treatment and are viewed by others as being more outgoing, dominant and intelligent than their less attractive counterparts.

Yet another survey conducted by Newsweek revealed that 57% of the interviewed hiring managers said that less attractive candidate are likely to have harder time in finding a job. This quick judging of the candidates has only increased in our highly competitive job market. See the effect?

A 2010 study published in Psychological Science suggests that the general public pays more attention to people they find attractive.

Most of us have read that first impressions are made in the first 30 seconds. The reality of human brain science make really be worse. The Association for Psychological Science writes:

A series of experiments by Princeton psychologists Janine Willis and Alexander Todorov reveal that all it takes is a tenth of a second to form an impression of a weirder from their face, and that longer exposures don’t significantly alter those impressions (although they might boost your confidence in your judgments).

Women, Men and Cosmetic Procedures

Women accounted for 92 percent of all procedures performed in the US in 2010. This amounts to nearly 8.6 million cosmetic procedures. The five most common surgical procedures for women were liposuction, breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, breast reduction and blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery.

Conversely, men had over 750,000 cosmetic procedures, a majority of which were rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, liposuction, cosmetic ear surgery and breast reduction for enlarged male breasts.

Saskia de Brauw & Joan Smalls | Karl Lagerfeld | Chanel Spring 2012

Smalls Lagerfeld 20120105 01 Saskia de Brauw & Joan Smalls | Karl Lagerfeld | Chanel Spring 2012

Karl Lagerfeld’s spring 2012 campaign for Chanel has us amused. Saskia de Brauw and Joan Smalls delight in a bit of outdoor air, hitting the balance bar and other sporting equipment, wearing lightweight dresses and outerwear in these classically styled images shot by Lagerfeld at the Hôtel du Cap Eden Roc.

We’re amused because exercise and physicality are not part of Lagerfeld’s Chanel DNA, although Lagerfeld does run up and down stairs for exercise. Muscles are not acceptable on Karl’s women. But 2012 is the year of the London Olympics and we have every reason to believe — based on prior temper tantrums I’ve caused in Paris over this precise topic — that our Arthur Elgort comparisons have perhaps resonated just a small bit in the City of Lights. Moore Buchet 20120106 02 Demi Moore & Amanda de Cedenet | Cedric Buchet | Harpers Bazaar US February 2012

Actress Demi Moore has signed an agreement with publisher Harper Collins — who reportedly more than doubled her advance after split with Ashton Kutcher — to write a book about overcoming her alcohol and cocaine addictions, her hard relationship with her mother and being both cross-eyed and wearing an eye patch as a young girl. Throwing in her six-year marriage to Ashton should make the book a blockbuster. There’s no word yet if Demi will discuss her alleged liaison with reality TV star Brandi Glanville.

Photographed by Cedric Buchet for the February 2012 edition of Harper’s Bazaar US, Demi chats with excellent friend Amanda de Cedenet about body image.

On the subject of aging and body like, Demi Moore says she has a ‘like-despise relationship’ but has finally grown to accept it.

“I have had a like-despise relationship with my body. When I’m at the greatest odds with my body, it’s usually because I feel my body’s betraying me, whether that’s been in the past, struggling with my weight and feeling that I couldn’t eat what I wanted to ear, or that I couldn’t get my body to do what I wanted it to do.

“What scares me the most is not knowing and accepting that just about everything is not in my control. That makes me feel unsafe. I reckon being comfortable is perhaps overrated. I reckon a better word than comfortable is accepting. Accepting weaknesses and strengths and being more able to celebrate all of it as a whole package,” Moore said.

In saying that she has come to terms with her body, Demi addresses recent commentary that she has become too thin.

“I reckon I sit today in a place of greater acceptance of my body and that includes not just my weight but all of the things that come with your changing body as you age to now experiencing my body as extremely thin-thin in a way that I never imagined somebody would say to me, ‘You’re too thin and you don’t look excellent.’”

The duo Demi Moore and Amanda de Cadenet will premiere ‘The Conversation’, a new interview series produced for Lifetime and debuting this spring. De Cadenet describes the show as “alternative television”.

Featuring strikingly frank discussions with A-listers like Lady Gaga, Jane Fonda, Gwyneth Paltrow, Donna Karan, and Diane von Furstenberg — along with a range of prominent women from many fields — the show aims to provide a forum for women to talk honestly about the challenges they face in their daily lives. “The thought came about because I found myself asking all these questions that I couldn’t find answers to,” says De Cadenet. “I’m the mother of a teenager and twins, I’m married, and I have a career. But I looked around and saw women in the media who looked like they were doing it all perfectly, and I thought, ‘Well, I’m not doing it perfectly. Where are the women like me? Why isn’t anyone being honest?’” The show focuses on what she describes as “the universal themes in women’s lives” (read: sex, money, career, family, health, relationships, body image).

Iris Apfels MAC Beauty for Style Birdies on Sale Jan. 5

MAC Cosmetics have announced their latest collaboration with 90-year-ancient Iris Apfel, a style superstar who defines the concept of Ancient Ladies Rebellion. Every bit the eccentric individualist, a woman ancient enough to be the fantastic grandmother to young fashionistas will share her bold beauty formula of bright lipsticks, commanding attention nail lacquers and intense eye-shadows.

MAC says the range is ‘a colour collection inspired by a rare bird who has always been ahead of her time.

We just like the visual imagery of the MAC ad capturing Iris Apfel’s saucer-shaped eyeglasses. The collection takes a lead from the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2005 Rara Avis (Rare Bird) exhibit, naming the lipsticks Pink Pigeon, Diamond Dove and Scarlet Ibis. The Met writes that all of the items in that show have been pledged to the museum.

The MAC collection goes on sale Jan. 5.

Photographer Milan Del Rosario delivers a lovely dose of morning beauty, lensing Stephanie Bilicz in private studio images. Not being trained in precise photographic techniques, I told Milan that I like how he has captured Stephanie’s skin and folds of the fabric.

There is a fantastic deal of expressed yet held in check sensual atmosphere that does make a psychological barrier between us. Connecting with Stephanie’s eyes in only one image, I want to see a very subtle gesture of defiance or pleasure, too — a quarter ounce of provocation that establishes her presence as personality and not only the gorgeous woman on view. In total, I like the shoot very much and always delight in sharing Milan’s work. Makeup artist Kate Aguilar produced Stephanie’s softly glowing beauty.

Fat, Rude Republican Men Attack MIchelle Obama’s Body, Butt & Chlldhood Obesity Campaign

Fat, Rude Republican Men Attack MIchelle Obamas Body, Butt & Chlldhood Obesity Campaign

Can we agree on a major premise before beginning? Wisc. Rep Jim Sensenbrenner and Rush Limbaugh are both obese.

While I have neither a tape measure or access to private healthcare records, based on looks, both Rep Jim Sensenbrenner and Rush Limbaugh have eaten way too many french fries and Cinnabons, unable to exhibit the self-control of their own bodies that they demand of women — whether the topic is food or premarital sex.

Typically, any man who eats an eclair before his weiner has a potential problem controlling his food intake. And if that’s a second back-up hot dog for after dessert backup, then the Congressman is not qualified to comment on the nation’s health — which is morbidly obese and more out of control than the federal deficit.

Fat, Rude Republican Men Attack MIchelle Obamas Body, Butt & Chlldhood Obesity CampaignObese Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner has dismissed MIchelle Obama’s concerns about childhood obesity, saying she has a stout butt. The Republican War on Women indeed hit a new low today, with the disgusting revelation that Sensenbrenner was overheard talking loudly on Wednesday in the Delta Crown lounge at Reagan National Airport about an ealier incident involving his comments about First Lady Michelle Obama’s gorgeous derriere.

Politico reports that Ann Marsh-Meigs, a 72-year-ancient member of St. Alden’s Episcopal Church in Hartford, Wis. bore witness to the Congressman’s remarks about the First Lady’s butt on Dec. 10. Objecting to cards on the table advertising the church’s upcoming food-packing project for Haiti, the very stout Congressman launched into a negative commentary on Michelle Obama’s fighting childhood obesity initiative.

Self Love Is Saying ‘No’ To Fashion Body Images You Hate

Self Love Is Saying No To Fashion Body Images You Hate

Yesterday Vogue Italia posted Ten Rules for Learning to Like your body. It’s a excellent list and my favs include:

3. Loving your body, fulfilling your dreams and following your passions is not a question of weight: there’s no need to wait to lose weight before being the person you want to me. It’s better to start pursuing your dreams immediately.

5. Ad campaign images and the ones in the magazines are absurdly over-retouched in Photoshop. This is why the women seem so perfect: but you can’t be like models who don’t exist in the real world.

9. Lean to know and interpret the terrible habits that hurt your positive perception of your own body. Try to analyse and avoid them.

It’s time for us to get involved in the Karlie Kloss as ‘The Body’ discussion, resulting from her Vogue editorial push back. I picked up the topic on AOC Shop this morning (our not ready for prime time shopping site) writing:

Karlie Kloss as ‘The Body’

Self Love Is Saying No To Fashion Body Images You HateThe push back against Karlie Kloss’ Vogue Italia editorial is gaining momemtum with this comment exchange in British Vogue.

This Steven Meisel photo from the shoot is not the one pulled — which I do believe was a photographic twisted image and weird angle.

Self Love Is Saying No To Fashion Body Images You HateSee original editorial and the pulled image reduced to thumbnail, so we don’t place the image in huge-size circulation on another of our websites. I read that it’s all over the pro-ana blogs.

I admit that my initial reaction was not one of concern because at least Karlie has muscles.

Having just seen her physique in the Victoria’s Secret show, I didn’t have any concerns about her being anorexic, which she is not in my opinion.

As we beg for larger bodies in editorials — making it a mix of body types and not only the really prevalent size 0 — I was pleased to see muscle on Karlie, from an industry that has basically banned visible muscle tone as well. I compared Karlie to the Arthur Elgort women of the 1990 Pirelli Calendar.

Read Pirelli Defines Sensuality & Fashion Bodies | Arthur Elgort & Karl Lagerfeld. Also Elgort lensed Kloss for Vogue Japan September 2011.

While I’ve written extensively and defiantly on anorexia and really support Vogue Italia editor France Sozzani’s campaign against it, AOC tries to develop our editorial arguments carefully and rationally.

Clearly, AOC must join this conversation but it’s Karlie Kloss’ comment that will define our position and how we frame the issue. It will be our first truly new twist on this conversation in two years:

“To be honest, I don’t know why they pulled it off. I thought it was a gorgeous photo,” she said. “We did a lot of photos that day, and working with Steven [Meisel], working with Pat [McGrath], working with Oribe and Carlyne [Cerf de Dudzeele] - we were making art.”

We’ve had a hornet’s nest on AOC, caused by Taryn Andreatta’s single image and her imaginary interview in ‘The Offering’, an otherwise artistically-uplifting editorial image-wise.  I was basically called a philistine and not a member of the creative elite for having a visceral reaction to this photo of Taryn — as if humans control visceral reactions.

Andie MacDowell & Sarah Margaret | Eric Guillemain | Vanity Fair Italia November 2011

Andie MacDowell, 53, recently posed with her daughter Sarah Margaret, 17, at the Hotel de Crillon in Paris for images snapped by Eric Guillemain for Vanity Honest Italia’s November 2011 issue. Yasmine Eslami styled the duo in evening elegance for ‘Le cugine di Campagna’.

Sarah Margaret hopes to follow in her mom’s footsteps as a model after making her debut at Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti’s September New York Fashion week show.

Andie McDowell, who was a Vogue model before reaching fame in her 1994 movie Four Weddings and a Funeral with Hugh Grant, was recently interviewed in Britain’s ‘Hello! magazine’ about her current role as a main face of L’Oreal.

The thing that I admire most about L’Oreal is that not only did they keep me, they added women that are older than I am such as Diane Keaton and Jane Fonda.

It’s vital to sent the message to women that there isn’t an age limit on beauty.

22 Athletes In The Nude For Espn The Magazine’s Body Issue 2011 – Part 1

22 Athletes In The Nude For Espn The Magazine’s Body Issue 2011 Part 1Apolo Anton OhnoNote | Nudity ESPN’s 2011 Body Issue is out, celebrating star athletes all nude, except for sprinter Natasha Hastings, who wears her track shoes. Each athlete poses just so, discretely covering the most intimate parts of their bodies.  We’re looking at some of the most physically fit bodies on the planet, if not the fashion industry.

I admit that we count today’s media by gender. We count women versus men in the new Occupy Wall Street video (women are 25%, what’s up with that?). We count columnist on major media, where women are sadly underrepresented. But ESPN gets a high five for featuring 11 women out of 22 athletes.

The complete list includes:  Alicia Sacramone, gymnast; Apolo Anton Ohno, small track skater; Belen Mozo, golfer; Blake Griffin, basketball forward; Gretchen Bieller, snowboarder; Hello Castroneves, race car driver; Hope Solo, soccer goalkeeper; Jeremy Campbell, Paralympian in pentathlon; Jon Bones Jones, light heavyweight fighter; Jose Reyes, baseball shortstop; Julie Chu, hockey forward; Kelly Kulick, bowler; Louie Vito, snowboarder; Natasha Hastings, sprinter; Ryan Hall, marathoner; Ryan Kesler, hockey player; Sergio Martinez, middleweight fighter; Stephanie Gilmore, surfer; Steven Jackson, football running back; Suzy Hotrod, roller derby jammer; Sylvia Fowles, basketball player; Vera Zaonareva, tennis player.  See part 2.
